My big weekend trip 12 October 2002
...I took an extended trip over the long weekend to New Mexico to visit several National Parks... I always wanted to see White Sands after I saw a photo of it once in a tour guide.... I stayed there for an entire day...

White Sands National Monument is surrounded by several army bases... Many of them treat the area in the middle of the desert as half beach, half 'winter sport' area.....

I came to White Sands because I heard that there is a magical sunset, with the sand glowing red, but there were only grey skies that day, which gave it an even stronger Winter feel....

And a perfect day it was.... I drove 700 miles from Phoenix to get this view again - it was totally worth it... Very dramatic day after rain in the desert....

I grew up in El Paso, Tx and have many memories of playing and exploring and sledding at white sands. These pictures do an amazing job of catching the magic there. Better than Disneyland. Thanks.
