Mt. St. Blanc (15774 ft/4808 m) is the highest mountain in western Europe, but the highest mountain in all of Europe is Mt. Elbrus (18510 ft/5642 m) in the Caucasus mountain range in Russia.

As much as I'd like to believe it, Mt. Blanc is not the highest mountain in Europe. Elbrus is.

KirykosAttica,Hellas / Wednesday, 27th September 2006
Yes,I agree. It is a common misunderstanding. The Alps include some very high mountains,Kitzbuehel in Austria is the hometown of skiing(not cross-country),many winter olympiads have taken place in the area, mountaineers and climbers have been coming since the second half of the 19th century, they are very famous, with great landscapes, but that's it!Mt. Elbrus is the king of the peaks in Europe, because as Jeff has foretold the convention was made and the boundaries are given. We talk of Europe due to this convention, otherwise we should refer to the Eurasian continent(inclusive of the indian subcontinent). Also due to this convention Kazakhstan and Georgia participate in the european sport events, even if only a part of these countries lay in Europe.
Lauren (15)Georgia, USA / Wednesday, 6th September 2006
Actually, Elbrus is the highest in Europe; it is 5642 meters high, and Mont Blanc is 4808 meters high. (Reference:Wikepedia)- Glad I could help. :-)
i have climed mt blanclondon / Tuesday, 18th April 2006
i have to say....until today i also thought mt blanc was the highest mountain in Europe...but it appears that it is not...Elbrus in russia/Georgia is significantly taller
whatevermiddle of nowhere conneticut / Tuesday, 21st March 2006

Thank you for this and thank you everyone for your comments. This really helped me with my report.
JeffSeattle, USA / Monday, 8th August 2005
Jim, since Europe and Asia are entirely contiguous, any division between them can only ever be convention. That Russia is considered part of Europe is based on its greater linguistic and cultural affinity with Slavic Europe than with China and Korea; indeed, that is the only reason Europe, Asia and India are not considered a single continent. Dividing Europe and Asia at the Caucasus is tantamount to dividing North America into two continents at the Rocky Mountains. Given that, convention IS the decisive factor, since there is no ocean between Europe and Asia; and there can be no "technical" description of the boundary.
JimSW England / Saturday, 2nd July 2005
Beyond the two approaches to choosing a peak southeast of the Asian mainland, an argument is made against Elbrus serving as Europe's highest peak. Without necessarily questioning the conventional boundaries of Europe in their conventional roles in describing commerce, population flows, and culture, home-atlas topographic maps make it obvious that the Caucasus range has a closer geophysical affinity with Asian mountains than with other European ones. While no list without Elbrus seems to have gained the traction with climbing enthusiasts that those with Elbrus have found, any weakness of the case for (The highest mountain peak in the Alps; on the border between France and Italy south of Geneva (15,781 feet high)) Mont Blanc (at 4,807 meters) in place of Elbus lies in its technical nature, not in an idiosyncratic view of European boundaries.
peterengland / Sunday, 24th April 2005
Good photograph. However comments stating that Mt Blanc is NOT Europe's highest peak are correct. (Europe goes on alot further east than Austria or whatever). But don't worry many others get this wrong - even in a recent quiz I took part in.

All I can say is WOOOOOOOOOOOW
steffelchencologne / Thursday, 8th January 2004
Nice photo indeed, could be a little bit larger though. As the comment above alludes it's a common error that people think the Montblanc is Europe's highest mountain. In fact the highest mountain of Europe is the Elbrus in the Caucasian mountains. The ridge of the Caucasian mountains form part of the European-Asian border (next to the Ural mountains and the Caspian Sea). Most of the ridge is concordant with the Russian-Georgian border. So the Elbrus with its height of 5642 m is still in Europe and not in Asia. Just fyi.
miclausanne / Monday, 11th August 2003
this is NOT europe's highest mountain!
kelzaustralia / Saturday, 9th August 2003
