Executioner's stone

Executioner's stone - Sigatoka - Cannibalism, Fijian Culture, Fort
On this stone, victims were laid down, killed and later transformed into a British ragout. Sometimes I wonder if the cannibal past of Fiji is just a lie to attract more tourists....

This is not the Killing stone. I've visited this fort before and there is another stone which is well cut and clearly shows where the head was placed and another rock was tipped just enough to squeeze the life out of that poor fellah. It closely resembles a grinding stone except that it is square & looks like a sofa cut on a rock.

Tavuni Hill Fort is actually a fort that was occupied by Tongans, and their descendants still own it today. About 95% of the Yavu ( building mounds) are circular which shows strong evidence of Tongan Fales (houses). The name Tavuni is derived from the Tongan word "TAPUNI" which means :CLOSED, in this sense,"NO TRESPASSING" or "Trespasses will be excecuted".It was during Sir Athur Gordons time (first English Govenor for Fiji)that this Fort had to be dismanteled due to heathen practices such as Cannibalism. It was hunger for Power that led to Cannibalism and the more people you ate, the more power you had because it was believed that the spirits of this victims made people more strong Physically and Spiritually. Such incidents are well documented in our National Archives by British Consulates etc. Fiji's history becomes more interesting as you dig deeper. Specially when you learn that Traditional hospitality and respectful manners was part of everyday life before Christianity arrived.

Do your research before you start insulting an entire countries'
heritage. The last thing we need is more misinformed foreigners
fucking up our countries reputation. You did it when you first came,
don't do it again! Our history is verbal, past down from generation to
genration, we know who we are, where we came from. There are Kawa books(family tree) for each dialect, district, and family in fiji going back hundreds of years. Dig up the homes of ancient chiefs and you will find human remains at the bottom of every pillar supporting that home. In the seventeenth century missionaries from Australia were eaten? Are you telling me that too is bogus? Will you be so quick to question Australias' validity ? The last cannibal ceremony was photo documented in the late eighteen hundreds, but had been with our peoples for thousands of years prior. We have not implimented that part of our tradition for various reasons, but don't insult a people's culture based on assumptions!

If you knew anything about Fijian history you wouldn't
wonder any more.
