Joe's mate Tony and the rest of us on his last night out in the beauty rooms....
A look from an airplane onto Mount Rainier.....
Closer look at Mount Rainier....
On a day in 1980, this volcano erupted and a third of the mountain was blown into the skies.... The sight of the crater is still enormous....
Last flight before everything changed....

Originally I was going to fly in the morning on the 11th, but that turned out to be too early, so I took a plane the night before. The plane was almost empty, it was such a pleasant quiet trip.... The next morning I woke up and got to the lobby of the hotel where people were crowded around televisions showing CNN.... My body was shaking and I thought I was having a nightmare and waiting to wake up....
All the flags on half-mast, the city quiet, I went for a walk....
Reporters were stationed all over the place at buildings and airports... Ready to give an immediate report when something new would happen....
Just a night photo of Denver's city hall... Strolling around and taking night photos is slowly becoming one of my hobbies.....
Doesn't look very popular.....

A new special exotic food selection at McDonalds.... This together with the McDonald's 'Bratwurst'....
Garden of the gods is a once private park which opened to the public and features all sorts of fascinating rock formations.....
Hills of Aspen.... As the planes were cancelled we had to drive from Denver to Los Angeles. I was the only driver taking three other Japanese members of the meeting I visited with me....
The amazing thing about the US is that as soon as you cross state lines, the landscape looks totally different....

Arches National Park was on the way, so we took a two hour detour, to have a quick glance at its enormous rock sculptures....
Looking over the Utah Landscape....
One day this will tumble down.... Until then it will fascinate thousands of visitors per year.....
One of Arches' most famous spots....

Business as usual
Las Vegas, 15 September 2001
Secret Capital of the US
Las Vegas, 15 September 2001
This kind of review just reminds me of old Westerns....
Driving for two days across America and seeing those amazing rock formations that have been there for thousands of years put the events of September 11 slightly into perspective..... It surely helped me....
Every single Casino had huge 'God Bless America' advertisements on them (see also other photo from that day), but it still was business as usual in Vegas when we were passing through....
Every single Casino had changed their advertisements to 'God Bless America' and 'One Nation Under God'. God should be replaced by the green dollar of course.... The Radio said things like 'take your mind off this weeks events, go and buy something nice for yourself'..... I found all of that slightly obscene, knowing I was going to return two weeks later.....
Two weeks later....

...we were back in Vegas.... Surprisingly the NYNY hotel, a fake collection of all things NYC serves as a wall where people leave flowers, messages and roses.... in honor of the people in NY....
Had the song by Sugar going through my head.....
...with a fisheye....
I like the way how the shadows of the canyon are projected on the big concrete structure of the Hoover Dam....

Chaos in the Airports Pt. II
Las Vegas, 30 September 2001
In Vegas we rented a little Wrangler and drove the few miles to the Hoover Dam... Unfortunately for Andy, the XP ringleader, who came from Scotland, the sun was boiling hot....
Just a picture of the moon rising above while the sun sets....
So this is the queue in front of the security gates. The queue is one and a half hours long.... Never saw so much chaos.... And this is more than two weeks after the incident of September 11....
If you were checking in luggage, the queues were far more than 3 hours.... and then you still had to pass the security queue which took us almost two hours.... and maybe like those on the photo you had to have your entire luggage opened and unpacked.... piece by piece.....
