Mountain Gorilla

Looks dangerous!

So human....

Disney Pavian
Griffith Park, 5 October 2002
With my new SLR, I went to the Zoo in Griffith Park and the Gorilla there became my favourite model.
But actually he was just yawning tiredly, very bored by us visitors starring at him....
...every one of these photos really corresponds to human emotions... The missing link is smaller than it seems....
This Pavian actually has a wart on his nose that looks like an eye out of a Disney animal... The creature itself was far more aggressive looking if you saw its real eyes... This is shot with wide open aperture through wire fences...

Ihm ist es als ob es tausend Staebe gaebe und hinter tausend Staeben keine Welt.... (originally about a Panther)....
Great place to watch the sunset, surfers and lots of wild birds....
More shots with my new tele lens....
They would circle across the sea and then suddenly dive straight down from thirty meters up to catch fish using their huge elastic beaks like nets....

Shame about the flagpole, maybe I should photoshop it out....
I will just call them all birds from now on to avoid conflict with ornithologists....

Footprint
Alamogordo, 12 October 2002
Visible as little white stripes over LA in the distance waiting to land at LAX....
Open up a scuba shop in the middle of the desert....
...I took an extended trip over the long weekend to New Mexico to visit several National Parks... I always wanted to see White Sands after I saw a photo of it once in a tour guide.... I stayed there for an entire day...
The sand is gypsum sand... White and very, very soft....
Brain to body, brain to body....

...there is snow all over the place - put some warm clothes on....
Many leaves' colors would bleed into the sand and leave trails of pastel colors behind....
...washed out colors, pastel colored....
Looks like a small forest in Winter....

Alamogordo, 12 October 2002
Off to riding the dunes....
Alamogordo, 12 October 2002
White Sands National Monument is surrounded by several army bases... Many of them treat the area in the middle of the desert as half beach, half 'winter sport' area.....
Seeing how strong the sand reflected off the sun I covered myself in Sunblock immediately....
...most probably Army personnel and their families...
The woman wore a T-shirt with an American flag entitled 'Unbreakable America' - most definately Army personnel....

Carpark with BBQ stations....
My body said it was hot, my brain said 'put some clothes on, there is snow everywhere!'...
...they close off the park and try out new James Bond gadgets at the White Sands Missile Range....
...shall I mention that this is not snow....

Dunes....
Alamogordo, 12 October 2002
Of course not....
...between the Alamogordo desert and White Sands....
I came to White Sands because I heard that there is a magical sunset, with the sand glowing red, but there were only grey skies that day, which gave it an even stronger Winter feel....
Many ripples across the dunes....

Cave Entrance
Carlsbad, 13 October 2002
The sand is amazing to walk upon... It is very soft on the surface, yet you don't sink in deep....
I really like this photo of the three kids walking across the dunes....
And then I left for Carlsbad....

...and darker and darker it gets....
long and winded through the darkness....
...people come from far over to visit the beauty of the caves in Carlsbad... The posters outside the caves however just read 'Eat 500 feet underground!' in order to attract the locals to this picnic place....
Most pictures here were exposed from 15-30 seconds....

Inside my nose
Carlsbad, 13 October 2002
...made me feel like Alice....
...lit by flourescent lights, halogen lights and HMI lights depend on how easy it is to exchange the bulbs.... On long-term exposure, the camera gives all the types of lights a different color... To the eye, the lights all looked fairly neutral....
Shapes of the Stalamites....
I reckon this is what the inside of my nose looks like to a bacteria....

Another ghost of Carlsberg....
Carlsbad, 13 October 2002
There was a ranger guided tour on the other side of the cave, when I shot this one... During the 20 seconds exposure, the ranger lit his flashlight over directly into the camera....
Timer on 20 seconds, I rushed over and released the flash handheld onto my face.... Too bad the background was lighter than I thought, so I ended up translucent....
...just imagine bats coming out of this cave....
Again, I underestimated the brightness of the background... Still is quite a good picture!

Smiling face
Carlsbad, 13 October 2002
River runs through it....
Guadalupe Mountains, 14 October 2002
This was a tricky one... The foreground is weakly lit by three separate, weakened releases from the flash during the long exposure....
Imagine the explorers who first came here in the thirties... Just armed with a torch...
The stalagtites end up creating sculptures of smiling girl's faces with long blond hair... Or maybe that's just my imagination....
On the final day of my trip I went to the Guadalupe Mountains park to see autumn colors - something I miss a lot living in LA... Unfortunately I was two weeks early.... but it was a beautiful park nonetheless....

El Paso, 15 October 2002
...and the colors start to come through
I at least had to have a reason for carrying my heavy Tele around....
Behind it the highest point of Texas....
Just about 30 different souvenirs with that phrase on it, made me decide to really never, ever mess with Texas....

Back at the Malibu Lagoon...
There is a certain form of wave that this beach is famous for... The surfers can ride a single low wave for almost half a minute....

After my failed attempt in McKittrick Canyon, I headed out to the San Diego mountains to catch a few autumn colors.....
..yet the colors were amazingly bright....

There was a recent wildfire up in Julian.... That mixed with the rainy grey skies and the desert sunlit in the background created an amazing atmosphere..... Looked like Mount St Helens....

Originally I planned to come back the next day to see the trees in sunlight, or the next weekend, but I ended up being sick....
