After an evening with lots of wine and BBQ, we ended up hiking the Wildseeloder the next day.... A mountain lake 2000m high up in a volcano-like crater...

 Otherwise it would have been a great picture...
 An exhibition of one of my favourite photographers... The amazing thing I found out is that he uses normal SLR gear for his photos: Velvia shot on Canon EOS. The exhibition was for free during the festival at the Royal Botanical Gardens....

Dani in front of the Forth Bridge.... Looks like a scene out of 'Manhattan'.

This old whale bone arch sits on top of the 'Law', an extinct volcano in North Berwick. My mother was staying here in 1964 and she had shown me a photo of her and my uncle Gerhard in front of this whale bone arch two weeks earlier...

Bass Rock is a seabird sanctuary off North Berwick. 80,000 nesting places are sitting on that rock. No wonder what the white color is....

 It was a cloudy day.... At least better than last time when I could not see the bridge at all....

Second stop... Third time I have been here, always on business...
A look out of my window showed me this...
 After a successful meeting, I rushed up Haleakala again... It was a windy and rainy day... Then things cleared up and I could see the crater...
 3.5km up over the island are these research labs...

A rare plant that only grows on this volcano.... For the natives bringing back one of its 'swords' or its flowers meant you had climbed the mountain

 With the crisp sky as background a nice contrast...
 To give you an idea how high this is.... 3kms and the distance is almost 20km....

They were actually quite far outside... This was shot with two extenders, so reached 600mm. And the sea was rougher than it looks. Cute picture.
This guy was so relaxed on the board... Later he was parallel to another guy and stepped over onto his board and the two rode along....

School of Risso Dolphins....
Strange bitemarks on them... Strange torpedo form... Unlike the smaller Dolphins in New Zealand, they did not want to swim along with the boats waves....
 A mola mola, aka sunfish... What a weird looking creature.... Like a ghost underwater....
 He did not seem to fear us at all....

After this photo.... the humpback dove down and did a big breach... Jumped out at least 8m high above us out of the water and crashed to the side and splat water all over us.... One of the best moments of that year...

We skipped LA - when we entered it Dani said 'it doesn't look as bad as you say' - 45 minutes later when we pass downtown, she said 'how could you have lived here for 4 years?'. Next stop the desert to drive on....
